MAKING TIME FOR DOWNTIME

Striking a Healthy Balance

The constant demands of running a business, making key decisions, and managing teams can leave little room for personal time. Here’s why making time for downtime is important.

E xecutives and entrepreneurs often find themselves immersed in never-ending work schedules. It comes with the job. However, not allowing oneself downtime is not only detrimental to healthy living and longevity, but saps productivity with far-reaching effects in and out of work. Many have heard this before, but the benefits of a work/life balance are only realized when they are actually applied. If you haven’t embraced this principle, you can start today to begin experiencing the following:

Increased Productivity:

Every business wants to boost productivity and profits. Whether by human capital or capital equipment, services and products are churned out each day. It’s a double- edged sword. While we’ve learned improved labor practices since the indusrtrial revolution, companies like Google have taken preserving human capital to new levels by including mental balance – especially among leaders who are steering the ship. Being busy does not equate to increased productivity. In fact, constantly being on the go and working long hours leads to decreased focus and diminished creativity. That’s where taking regular breaks come in. Allowing oneself downtime provides an opportunity for decompressing and rejuvenation. It allows executives and entrepreneurs to recharge their mental batteries, clear their minds, and return to work with renewed vigor and fresh perspectives. This, in turn, will lead to enhanced problem-solving abilities, better decision-making, and increased efficiency when managing their businesses.

Stress Reduction:

The demanding nature of executive roles can often result in high levels of stress. Chronic stress can have numerous detrimental effects from headaches to heart palpatations, anxiety, gastrointestinal issues, behavioral mood swings. Stress is not something anyone should want. This is why simple downtime activities, such as hobbies, exercise, or spending quality time with loved ones, helps reduce stress levels by providing an escape from work-related pressures. As a busy professional, you can unwind, relax, and engage in activities that bring joy and fulfillment.

Fostering Creativity and Innovation:

Innovation and creative thinking are the impetus for human advancement. Technologies we often take for granted like our mobile phones were non-existent as litlle as 30 years ago. We need innovation to thrive.. Taking moments to clear our minds is part of that.

Steve Jobs, for example, who did effectively change the world, would often take short breaks to innovate. Any executive or entrepreneur who wants to grow their business needs to do the same. What downtime provides is an opportunity for the brain to make new synaptic connections and generate fresh ideas. You can do this whether it’s reading a book, spending time with family, or simply taking a walk on the beach.

Improved Work-Life Balance:

To be sure, allowing suffcient time to acheive goals and successfully execute projects requires a focused discipline and putting in more hours than most of your employees. The constant pressure to succeed and to meet business goals undoubtedly results in the need for personal sacrifices. The message here for leaders is to allow their leadership skills to flourish while letting other talented people share in the workload. Taking too much on will invariably lead to stress and a converse diminished sense of fulfillment

By setting personal boundaries and making time for relaxation and leisure activities, executives and entrepreneurs can enjoy the fruit of their labor as they lead a harmonious and more fulfilling life.
